One of the most difficult times to stay motivated is when nothing seems to be going right. We can plan furiously, have our goals set, be discipled in our approach, but sometimes, even often, life is beyond our control.
What do you do when despite your best planning, and all the right attitude in the world, your plans seem to be going down the shute – and your motivation is going with them?
A good first response is to stop any negative thoughts in their tracks. Get up and go and do something completely different to what you were doing. If you were working at the computer, go outside. Water the garden, pull out some weeds, walk the dog. If a family member or colleague is driving you crazy – get some time alone, away from them as soon as you can.

Getting perspective is vital, and it’s really difficult to get perspective when your problem is staring you in the face. Remember the old saying: Can’t see the wood for the trees?
It is also a big challenge not to be negative when you are feeling emotional. Our emotions can have us saying and doing things that we often regret when we are thinking clearly again.
Sometimes it is necessary to literally "sleep on the problem". Overtiredness can make it impossible to make good decisions. It is far better to take the time to get rested and be thinking clearly, than to force yourself to try and solve an issue while you are tired and/or frustrated.
When life gets difficult, a common response is to throw your hands in the air, and think – I give up. But, that isn’t going to help you reach your goals. So, getting perspective is the first step, and then when you are in the right frame of mind to reassess your position, you will most likely see the answer to your problem.
So, when frustration sets in and your motivation is slipping:
1. Create some time away to recharge your batteries
2. Get some sleep if you need it
3. Don’t entertain the thought of giving up
4. Readdress your problem when you mind is clearer
Things often do look better in the morning.
