Achieving Goals – One Step at a Time

Don’t let life discourage you;
everyone who got where he is
had to begin where he was

Richard Evans

It’s true, we all start from where we are.  Whether building a business, a relationship, a house, or a career.  And, when we look ahead to where we want to be, the journey can look mighty daunting.

One step at a time is the only way to proceed.  If we look too far ahead, we’ll never make the finish line.  I know it’s necessary to have a vision of where we are going, but the everyday steps we need to take to get us there are where our focus needs to be.

When we start our day, our plan needs to be: What do I need to accomplish today to get me one step closer to my dream? By accomplishing that step, we will feel satisfied. Keeping frustration at bay is important, and the best way to do that is by achieving daily that which will bring us closer to our intention (our dream).

Imagine how much progress can be made if we make one positive step every day towards achieving our dream business, dream relationship, dream house or dream career.  How far will you have come in one month? one year?

Having support and encouragement is often the key to whether we reach our final destination. All of us have good and bad days – that’s life.  Seeking the support of good mentors and taking the journey one step at a time is a great recipe for success.

How to Stay Motivated

Motivation -

We human beings are very feeling oriented.  It is very easy for us to say:  “I don’t feel like it today”.  Huge mistake…  When you allow your feelings to dictate whether you do something or not – you’re really looking for a reason to fail.

Motivation is not some extra talent that you need to acquire in order to achieve something.  Motivation is getting yourself a big enough reason to complete your goal or dream.  If you have a big enough reason, an important enough goal at the end of the tunnel, finding motivation becomes a lot easier.

Taking action is one of the most important ingredients to success, and it’s one of the best ways to get motivated about a project.  Thinking about what needs to be done usually means that’s all you achieve – thinking.  Taking action, daily, is what will get you closer to your goal.

Looking at the big picture can frequently make you feel overwhelmed.  It’s important to have a plan, but break the plan down into stages – monthly, weekly and daily goals, and make sure you stick to them.  If you have to, make yourself answerable to someone – a buddy, friend, or family member.

Motivate yourself by thinking, if my life depended on me getting this done every day, I would do it.  Take responsibility for making sure you complete your daily tasks toward achieving your goal.  Reward yourself in a positive way when you achieve milestones.

Have a diary or notebook where you tick off when you have achieved your goal.  Being able to look back on progress made is a great motivator.  When you see what progress you have already made, you are more inclined to knuckle down to the next task.

Staying motivated when you have setbacks can be challenging.  It is a lot easier to be motivated when everything is working, but much harder in the face of challenges.  Always remember, tomorrow is a new day.  Take one day at a time.  We all have bad days, but just because you have one day that doesn’t go as planned, don’t allow yourself to give up.

Regroup your thoughts, remind yourself of your reasons for setting your goal in the first place, and start fresh.  Treat every day as a new opportunity to achieve and succeed.  Every person who has been successfull, in whatever form that means to them, has been so because they have persevered despite setbacks and frustrations.  They have not allowed their motivation to fade for any significant length of time.

It is human to feel disappointment or discouragement, but don’t allow yourself to stay there.  Find what will motivate you and start over.

Get Motivated – Improve Your Lifestyle Today

One of the most difficult times to stay motivated is when nothing seems to be going right.  We can plan furiously, have our goals set, be discipled in our approach, but sometimes, even often, life is beyond our control.

What do you do when despite your best planning, and all the right attitude in the world, your plans seem to be going down the shute – and your motivation is going with them?

A good first response is to stop any negative thoughts in their tracks.  Get up and go and do something completely different to what you were doing.  If you were working at the computer, go outside.  Water the garden, pull out some weeds, walk the dog.  If a family member or colleague is driving you crazy – get some time alone, away from them as soon as you can.

Getting perspective is vital, and it’s really difficult to get perspective when your problem is staring you in the face.  Remember the old saying:  Can’t see the wood for the trees?

It is also a big challenge not to be negative when you are feeling emotional.  Our emotions can have us saying and doing things that we often regret when we are thinking clearly again.

Sometimes it is necessary to literally "sleep on the problem".  Overtiredness can make it impossible to make good decisions.  It is far better to take the time to get rested and be thinking clearly, than to force yourself to try and solve an issue while you are tired and/or frustrated.

When life gets difficult, a common response is to throw your hands in the air, and think – I give up.  But, that isn’t going to help you reach your goals.  So, getting perspective is the first step, and then when you are in the right frame of mind to reassess your position, you will most likely see the answer to your problem.

So, when frustration sets in and your motivation is slipping:

1.  Create some time away to recharge your batteries
2.  Get some sleep if you need it
3.  Don’t entertain the thought of giving up
4.  Readdress your problem when you mind is clearer

Things often do look better in the morning.
